Organizing Learning Disabilities (LD) Awareness Month Activities

Raising public awareness and promoting greater knowledge and understanding is critical and LD Awareness Month is a great opportunity to concentrate activities across Canada. Here are some suggestions on how to start organizing an event, while suggestions for actual activities can be found in the next section.

Suggestions for LD Awareness Month Activities

The following activities are suggestions for LD Awareness Month for local chapters or Provincial/territorial LDAs. However, they can also be held any time. Keeping the message strong is as important as focusing efforts over the course of one month.

Publicizing Your Event

Now that you have developed a work plan, it is essential that you inform your target audience – and media – about the event. It’s time to publicize.

Radio Public Service Announcement (PSA)

In 2004, the LDAC distributed a national public service announcement to over 400 radio stations, encouraging Canadians with LD to visit the LDAC Web site for information or to reach out to their Learning Disability Association chapter. This very successful campaign received a lot of air play, being heard an estimated 100 million times.

A second 30 second radio PSA was produced in English and French, and was distributed to over 400 radio stations across Canada in March 2005.

If you are interested in airing a PSA on your local radio stations, please contact the station manager and asked them to download the MP3 file on the LDAC website.

LDAC Logo

The LDAC logo was designed in 1968, to represent that learning disabilities occur both in male and female persons and that the degree of disability runs all the way from severe to very mild.
