Scholarships

THE DOREEN KRONICK SCHOLARSHIP

PURPOSE:

To encourage graduate students, whose program of study will lead them to a field that will assist persons with learning disabilities.

FIELDS OF STUDY:

Any graduate field of study whose program will lead them to a field that will assist persons with learning disabilities.

VALUE OF SCHOLARSHIP:

The scholarship is valued at $500.00.

NUMBER:

One scholarship will be awarded annually.

DURATION:

One academic year on a full-time or part-time basis as defined by the educational institution, in the year of application. The recipient of the scholarship will not be eligible to re-apply for three years.

APPLICATION DEADLINE:

Completed applications as well as all supporting documents must be received by the Learning Disabilities Association of Canada, postmarked no later than May 15.

ELIGIBLE INSTITUTIONS:

Any Canadian university.

CONDITIONS:

  1. Candidates must have completed an undergraduate degree either at a university or junior college whose courses are recognized by a Canadian university;
  2. Candidates must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents who have lived in Canada for at least two years as permanent residents; and
  3. Candidates must be pursuing a graduate program of study at a Canadian university which will lead that individual into a field that will lead them to be able to assist persons with learning disabilities.

PROGRAM ADMINISTRATION:

The scholarship program is administered by the Learning Disabilities Association of Canada (LDAC). The selection is made by a committee from the LDAC Board of Directors.

AGE:

Eighteen years of age and older (18 +)

CRITERIA:

The applicant must complete the original form and submit a 200 word outline on:

  1. their plans for the ensuing university year and a description of their future academic program component(s) related to learning disabilities;
  2. their future career goals related to learning disabilities and
  3. their community involvement as a volunteer, any extracurricular activities, and/or employment.

In addition candidates must arrange to have the following documents sent to the above address:

  1. Three letters of reference: one from the graduate advisor, one each from two people who have known the applicant for a minimum of one year. Letters of reference from relatives will not be admissible.
  2. An official academic transcript covering the last year of study. Note: facsimiles or photocopies are not acceptable.

OBLIGATION OF WINNERS :

The scholarship winner, notified by August 31, must submit confirmation of registration to the educational institution and graduate program.

The recipient must provide LDAC with their Social Insurance Number in order to be issued their T4A slip.

The scholarship winner must provide a picture and a brief biography and consent for both to appear in the LDAC newsletter National.

PAYMENT OF AWARD :

Upon receipt of all required documentation, LDAC will forward the cheque directly to the recipient. As scholarships are considered income, LDAC will issue the relevant T4A slip for income tax declaration purposes.
